The Pharisees were a religious-political group in ancient Judea, whose representatives were characterised by their ostentatious strict observance of the rites of the Old Testament religion. Christ, denouncing religious hypocrisy, often called them hypocrites: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites" (Matt. 23:13-15; Luke 11:44).
