«Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
«And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
«Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
«For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
«Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
«Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
«The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.
But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
«No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
«Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
«So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
«Therefore do not worry, saying, «What shall we eat?́ or «What shall we drink?́ or «What shall we wear?́
For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city.
Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, «Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.»
And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, «This Man blasphemes!»
But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, «Why do you think evil in your hearts?
For which is easier, to say, «Your sins are forgiven you,́ or to say, «Arise and walḱ?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins»--then He said to the paralytic, «Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.»
And he arose and departed to his house.
Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.
As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, «Follow Me.» So he arose and followed Him.
Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples.
And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, «Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?»
When Jesus heard that, He said to them, «Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
But go and learn what this means: «I desire mercy and not sacrifice.́ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.»
Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, «Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?»
And Jesus said to them, «Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.
Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.»
While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, «My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.»
So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.
And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment.
For she said to herself, «If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.»
But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, «Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.» And the woman was made well from that hour.
When Jesus came into the ruleŕs house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing,
He said to them, «Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.» And they ridiculed Him.
But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
And the report of this went out into all that land.
When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, «Son of David, have mercy on us!»
And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, «Do you believe that I am able to do this?» They said to Him, «Yes, Lord.»
Then He touched their eyes, saying, «According to your faith let it be to you.»
And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, «See that no one knows it.»
But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country.
As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed.
And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, «It was never seen like this in Israel!»
But the Pharisees said, «He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.»
Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
Then He said to His disciples, «The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.»
Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves;
and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.
And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, «Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.»
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, «This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!»
And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.
But Jesus came and touched them and said, «Arise, and do not be afraid.»
When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, «Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.»
And His disciples asked Him, saying, «Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?»
Jesus answered and said to them, «Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things.
But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.»
Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying,
«Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.»
Then Jesus answered and said, «O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.»
And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, «Why could we not cast it out?»
So Jesus said to them, «Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, «Move from here to there,́ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.»
Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, «The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men,
and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up.» And they were exceedingly sorrowful.
When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, «Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?»
He said, «Yes.» And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, «What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?»
Peter said to Him, «From strangers.» Jesus said to him, «Then the sons are free.
Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.»
