Isaiah's Son a Sign of the Assyrian Invasion
Then the Lord said to me, Take a large tablet and write on it in common characters, “Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz,”
and have it attested for me by reliable witnesses, the priest Uriah and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.
And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz;
for before the child knows how to call “My father” or “My mother,” the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away by the king of Assyria.
The Lord spoke to me again:
Because this people has refused the waters of Shiloah that flow gently, and melt in fear before Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
therefore, the Lord is bringing up against it the mighty flood waters of the River, the king of Assyria and all his glory; it will rise above all its channels and overflow all its banks;
it will sweep on into Judah as a flood, and, pouring over, it will reach up to the neck; and its outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.
Band together, you peoples, and be dismayed; listen, all you far countries; gird yourselves and be dismayed; gird yourselves and be dismayed!
Take counsel together, but it shall be brought to naught; speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.
For the Lord spoke thus to me while his hand was strong upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying:
Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what it fears, or be in dread.
But the Lord of hosts, him you shall regard as holy; let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
He will become a sanctuary, a stone one strikes against; for both houses of Israel he will become a rock one stumbles over—a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
And many among them shall stumble; they shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.
Disciples of Isaiah
Bind up the testimony, seal the teaching among my disciples.
I will wait for the Lord , who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.
See, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
Now if people say to you, “Consult the ghosts and the familiar spirits that chirp and mutter; should not a people consult their gods, the dead on behalf of the living,
for teaching and for instruction?” Surely, those who speak like this will have no dawn!
They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry; when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will curse their king and their gods. They will turn their faces upward,
or they will look to the earth, but will see only distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be thrust into thick darkness.
Impending Judgment on the Earth
Now the Lord is about to lay waste the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor.
The earth shall be utterly laid waste and utterly despoiled; for the Lord has spoken this word.
The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers; the heavens languish together with the earth.
The earth lies polluted under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth dwindled, and few people are left.
The wine dries up, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh.
The mirth of the timbrels is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
No longer do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
The city of chaos is broken down, every house is shut up so that no one can enter.
There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has reached its eventide; the gladness of the earth is banished.
Desolation is left in the city, the gates are battered into ruins.
For thus it shall be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is ended.
They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; they shout from the west over the majesty of the Lord.
Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord ; in the coastlands of the sea glorify the name of the Lord , the God of Israel.
From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, I pine away, I pine away. Woe is me! For the treacherous deal treacherously, the treacherous deal very treacherously.
Terror, and the pit, and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth!
Whoever flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit; and whoever climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.
The earth is utterly broken, the earth is torn asunder, the earth is violently shaken.
The earth staggers like a drunkard, it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again.
On that day the Lord will punish the host of heaven in heaven, and on earth the kings of the earth.
They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished.
Then the moon will be abashed, and the sun ashamed; for the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before his elders he will manifest his glory.
