40:0Thanksgiving for Deliverance and Prayer for Help.
To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.
40:1I waited patiently for the Lord ; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
40:2He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
40:3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord .
40:4Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods.
40:5You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you. Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be counted.
40:6Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
40:7Then I said, “Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me.
40:8I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
40:9I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord .
40:10I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
40:11Do not, O Lord , withhold your mercy from me; let your steadfast love and your faithfulness keep me safe forever.
40:12For evils have encompassed me without number; my iniquities have overtaken me, until I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.
40:13Be pleased, O Lord , to deliver me; O Lord , make haste to help me.
40:14Let all those be put to shame and confusion who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who desire my hurt.
40:15Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
40:16But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
40:17As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God.
114:0God's Wonders at the Exodus
114:1When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
114:2Judah became God's sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
114:3The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back.
114:4The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.
114:5Why is it, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back?
114:6O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs?
114:7Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord , at the presence of the God of Jacob,
114:8who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.
115:0The Impotence of Idols and the Greatness of God 115:1Not to us, O Lord , not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.
115:2Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
115:3Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases.
115:4Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.
115:5They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.
115:6They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell.
115:7They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; they make no sound in their throats.
115:8Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them.
115:9O Israel, trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield.
115:10O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield.
115:11You who fear the Lord , trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield.
115:12The Lord has been mindful of us; he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron;
115:13he will bless those who fear the Lord , both small and great.
115:14May the Lord give you increase, both you and your children.
115:15May you be blessed by the Lord , who made heaven and earth.
115:16The heavens are the Lord 's heavens, but the earth he has given to human beings.
115:17The dead do not praise the Lord , nor do any that go down into silence.
115:18But we will bless the Lord from this time on and forevermore. Praise the Lord!
