22:0Plea for Deliverance from Suffering and Hostility.
To the leader: according to The Deer of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.
22:1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
22:2O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find no rest.
22:3Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
22:4In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.
22:5To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.
22:6But I am a worm, and not human; scorned by others, and despised by the people.
22:7All who see me mock at me; they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;
22:8“Commit your cause to the Lord ; let him deliver— let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”
22:9Yet it was you who took me from the womb; you kept me safe on my mother's breast.
22:10On you I was cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you have been my God.
22:11Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.
22:12Many bulls encircle me, strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
22:13they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.
22:14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;
22:15my mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.
22:16For dogs are all around me; a company of evildoers encircles me. My hands and feet have shriveled;
22:17I can count all my bones. They stare and gloat over me;
22:18they divide my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.
22:19But you, O Lord , do not be far away! O my help, come quickly to my aid!
22:20Deliver my soul from the sword, my life from the power of the dog!
22:21Save me from the mouth of the lion! From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued me.
22:22I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
22:23You who fear the Lord , praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him; stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
22:24For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried to him.
22:25From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him.
22:26The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord . May your hearts live forever!
22:27All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord ; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him.
22:28For dominion belongs to the Lord , and he rules over the nations.
22:29To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for him.
22:30Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord,
22:31and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.
33:0The Greatness and Goodness of God
33:1Rejoice in the Lord , O you righteous. Praise befits the upright.
33:2Praise the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings.
33:3Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
33:4For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.
33:5He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord .
33:6By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth.
33:7He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle; he put the deeps in storehouses.
33:8Let all the earth fear the Lord ; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
33:9For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
33:10The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
33:11The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
33:12Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord , the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.
33:13The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind.
33:14From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth—
33:15he who fashions the hearts of them all, and observes all their deeds.
33:16A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
33:17The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save.
33:18Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love,
33:19to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
33:20Our soul waits for the Lord ; he is our help and shield.
33:21Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.
33:22Let your steadfast love, O Lord , be upon us, even as we hope in you.
34:0Praise for Deliverance from Trouble.
Of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.
34:1I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
34:2My soul makes its boast in the Lord ; let the humble hear and be glad.
34:3O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
34:4I sought the Lord , and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
34:5Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed.
34:6This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord , and was saved from every trouble.
34:7The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
34:8O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him.
34:9O fear the Lord , you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want.
34:10The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
34:11Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord .
34:12Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good?
34:13Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.
34:14Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
34:15The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.
34:16The face of the Lord is against evildoers, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
34:17When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles.
34:18The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.
34:19Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues them from them all.
34:20He keeps all their bones; not one of them will be broken.
34:21Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
34:22The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
