On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, «They have no wine.»
Jesus said to her, «Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.»
His mother said to the servants, «Whatever He says to you, do it.»
Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece.
Jesus said to them, «Fill the waterpots with water.» And they filled them up to the brim.
And He said to them, «Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.» And they took it.
When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom.
And he said to him, «Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!»
This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.
Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business.
When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changerś money and overturned the tables.
And He said to those who sold doves, «Take these things away! Do not make My Fatheŕs house a house of merchandise!»
Then His disciples remembered that it was written, «Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.»
So the Jews answered and said to Him, «What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?»
Jesus answered and said to them, «Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.»
Then the Jews said, «It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?»
But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.
But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men,
and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
«Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.»
Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.
Then Jesus said to them again, «Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.
I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
«I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.
The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.
As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.
«Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.
No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.»
Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings.
And many of them said, «He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?»
Others said, «These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?»
Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter.
And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomońs porch.
Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, «How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.»
Jesus answered them, «I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Fatheŕs name, they bear witness of Me.
But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Fatheŕs hand.
I and My Father are one.»
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
Jesus answered them, «Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?»
The Jews answered Him, saying, «For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.»
Jesus answered them, «Is it not written in your law, «I said, «You are gods»́?
If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, «You are blaspheming,́ because I said, «I am the Son of God́?
If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.»
Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.
And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed.
Then many came to Him and said, «John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.»
And many believed in Him there.
«Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
In My Fatheŕs house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
And where I go you know, and the way you know.»
Thomas said to Him, «Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?»
Jesus said to him, «I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
«If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.»
Philip said to Him, «Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.»
Jesus said to him, «Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, «Show us the Fatheŕ?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
«Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
«If you love Me, keep My commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
«A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.
At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.»
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, «Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?»
Jesus answered and said to him, «If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Fatheŕs who sent Me.
«These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
You have heard Me say to you, «I am going away and coming back to you.́ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, «I am going to the Father,́ for My Father is greater than I.
«And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe.
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.
But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.
And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.
Then they said, «Hail, King of the Jews!» And they struck Him with their hands.
Pilate then went out again, and said to them, «Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.»
Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, «Behold the Man!»
Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, «Crucify Him, crucify Him!» Pilate said to them, «You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.»
The Jews answered him, «We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.»
Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid,
and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, «Where are You from?» But Jesus gave him no answer.
Then Pilate said to Him, «Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?»
Jesus answered, «You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.»
From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, «If you let this Man go, you are not Caesaŕs friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.»
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, «Behold your King!»
But they cried out, «Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!» Pilate said to them, «Shall I crucify your King?» The chief priests answered, «We have no king but Caesar!»
Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away.
And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,
where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.
Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, «Do not write, «The King of the Jews,́ but, «He said, «I am the King of the Jews.»»́
Pilate answered, «What I have written, I have written.»
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.
They said therefore among themselves, «Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,» that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: «They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.» Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His motheŕs sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, «Woman, behold your son!»
Then He said to the disciple, «Behold your mother!» And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, «I thirst!»
Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, «It is finished!» And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.
For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, «Not one of His bones shall be broken.»
And again another Scripture says, «They shall look on Him whom they pierced.»
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.
And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.
Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jewś Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
