In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
and saying, «Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!»
For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: «The voice of one crying in the wilderness: «Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.»́
Now John himself was clothed in cameĺs hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him
and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, «Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,
and do not think to say to yourselves, «We have Abraham as our father.́ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.»
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
And John tried to prevent Him, saying, «I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?»
But Jesus answered and said to him, «Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.» Then he allowed Him.
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, «This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.»
On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea.
And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: «Behold, a sower went out to sow.
And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them.
Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth.
But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.
And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them.
But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear!»
And the disciples came and said to Him, «Why do You speak to them in parables?»
He answered and said to them, «Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.
For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: «Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive;
For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.́
But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear;
for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
«Therefore hear the parable of the sower:
When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.
But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;
yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.»
Another parable He put forth to them, saying: «The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field;
but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.
But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared.
So the servants of the owner came and said to him, «Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?́
He said to them, «An enemy has done this.́ The servants said to him, «Do you want us then to go and gather them up?́
But he said, «No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them.
Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, «First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.»»́
Another parable He put forth to them, saying: «The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field,
which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.»
Another parable He spoke to them: «The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.»
All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them,
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: «I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.»
Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, «Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.»
He answered and said to them: «He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.
The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.
The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.
Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.
The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness,
and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
«Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
«Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls,
who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
«Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind,
which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away.
So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just,
and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.»
Jesus said to them, «Have you understood all these things?» They said to Him, «Yes, Lord.»
Then He said to them, «Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.»
Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there.
When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, «Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?
Is this not the carpenteŕs son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?
And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?»
So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, «A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.»
Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said:
«The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son,
and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come.
Again, he sent out other servants, saying, «Tell those who are invited, «See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.»́
But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business.
And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them.
But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
Then he said to his servants, «The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.́
So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.
«But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment.
So he said to him, «Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?́ And he was speechless.
Then the king said to the servants, «Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.́
«For many are called, but few are chosen.»
Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk.
And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, «Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men.
Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?»
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, «Why do you test Me, you hypocrites?
Show Me the tax money.» So they brought Him a denarius.
And He said to them, «Whose image and inscription is this?»
They said to Him, «Caesaŕs.» And He said to them, «Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesaŕs, and to God the things that are God́s.»
When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way.
The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,
saying: «Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother.
Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh.
Last of all the woman died also.
Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.»
Jesus answered and said to them, «You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,
«I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob́? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.»
And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.
Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,
«Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?»
Jesus said to him, «»You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.́
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like it: «You shall love your neighbor as yourself.́
On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.»
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
saying, «What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?» They said to Him, «The Son of David.»
He said to them, «How then does David in the Spirit call Him «Lord,́ saying:
«The LORD said to my Lord, «Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool»́?
If David then calls Him «Lord,́ how is He his Son?»
And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.
«Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,
but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.
«And at midnight a cry was heard: «Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!́
Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.
And the foolish said to the wise, «Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.́
But the wise answered, saying, «No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.́
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
«Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, «Lord, Lord, open to us!́
But he answered and said, «Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.́
«Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
«For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.
Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.
And likewise he who had received two gained two more also.
But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord́s money.
After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
«So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, «Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.́
His lord said to him, «Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.́
He also who had received two talents came and said, «Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.́
His lord said to him, «Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.́
«Then he who had received the one talent came and said, «Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.́
«But his lord answered and said to him, «You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.
So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.
So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
«For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.́
«When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
Then the King will say to those on His right hand, «Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.́
«Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, «Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?
When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?́
And the King will answer and say to them, «Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.́
«Then He will also say to those on the left hand, «Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;
I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.́
«Then they also will answer Him, saying, «Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?́
Then He will answer them, saying, «Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.́
And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.»
