For behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, Takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah The stock and the store, The whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water;
The mighty man and the man of war, The judge and the prophet, And the diviner and the elder;
The captain of fifty and the honorable man, The counselor and the skillful artisan, And the expert enchanter.
«I will give children to be their princes, And babes shall rule over them.
The people will be oppressed, Every one by another and every one by his neighbor; The child will be insolent toward the elder, And the base toward the honorable.»
When a man takes hold of his brother In the house of his father, saying, «You have clothing; You be our ruler, And let these ruins be under your power,»
In that day he will protest, saying, «I cannot cure your ills, For in my house is neither food nor clothing; Do not make me a ruler of the people.»
For Jerusalem stumbled, And Judah is fallen, Because their tongue and their doings Are against the LORD, To provoke the eyes of His glory.
The look on their countenance witnesses against them, And they declare their sin as Sodom; They do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.
«Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, For they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him.
As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.»
The LORD stands up to plead, And stands to judge the people.
The LORD will enter into judgment With the elders of His people And His princes: «For you have eaten up the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the faces of the poor?» Says the Lord GOD of hosts.
Moreover the LORD says: «Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, And walk with outstretched necks And wanton eyes, Walking and mincing as they go, Making a jingling with their feet,
Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the LORD will uncover their secret parts.»
In that day the Lord will take away the finery: The jingling anklets, the scarves, and the crescents;
The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;
The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands; The perfume boxes, the charms, The nose jewels, The outer garments, the purses, The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes.
and the rings; The nose jewels,
the festal apparel, and the mantles; The outer garments, the purses,
and the mirrors; The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes.
And so it shall be: Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench; Instead of a sash, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, baldness; Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty. and the rings; The nose jewels,
Your men shall fall by the sword, And your mighty in the war.
Her gates shall lament and mourn, And she being desolate shall sit on the ground.
Now it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to make war against it, but could not prevail against it.
And it was told to the house of David, saying, «Syriás forces are deployed in Ephraim.» So his heart and the heart of his people were moved as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.
Then the LORD said to Isaiah, «Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fulleŕs Field,
and say to him: «Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and the son of Remaliah.
Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have plotted evil against you, saying,
«Let us go up against Judah and trouble it, and let us make a gap in its wall for ourselves, and set a king over them, the son of Tabel»--
thus says the Lord GOD: «It shall not stand, Nor shall it come to pass.
For the head of Syria is Damascus, And the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken, So that it will not be a people.
The head of Ephraim is Samaria, And the head of Samaria is Remaliah́s son. If you will not believe, Surely you shall not be established.»»́
Moreover the LORD spoke again to Ahaz, saying,
«Ask a sign for yourself from the LORD your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.»
But Ahaz said, «I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD!»
Then he said, «Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also?
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.
For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings.
The LORD will bring the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your fatheŕs house--days that have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah.»
And it shall come to pass in that day That the LORD will whistle for the fly That is in the farthest part of the rivers of Egypt, And for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
They will come, and all of them will rest In the desolate valleys and in the clefts of the rocks, And on all thorns and in all pastures.
In the same day the Lord will shave with a hired razor, With those from beyond the River, with the king of Assyria, The head and the hair of the legs, And will also remove the beard.
It shall be in that day That a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep;
So it shall be, from the abundance of milk they give, That he will eat curds; For curds and honey everyone will eat who is left in the land.
It shall happen in that day, That wherever there could be a thousand vines Worth a thousand shekels of silver, It will be for briers and thorns.
With arrows and bows men will come there, Because all the land will become briers and thorns.
And to any hill which could be dug with the hoe, You will not go there for fear of briers and thorns; But it will become a range for oxen And a place for sheep to roam.
The burden against the Valley of Vision. What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops,
You who are full of noise, A tumultuous city, a joyous city? Your slain men are not slain with the sword, Nor dead in battle.
All your rulers have fled together; They are captured by the archers. All who are found in you are bound together; They have fled from afar.
Therefore I said, «Look away from me, I will weep bitterly; Do not labor to comfort me Because of the plundering of the daughter of my people.»
For it is a day of trouble and treading down and perplexity By the Lord GOD of hosts In the Valley of Vision-- Breaking down the walls And of crying to the mountain.
Elam bore the quiver With chariots of men and horsemen, And Kir uncovered the shield.
It shall come to pass that your choicest valleys Shall be full of chariots, And the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.
He removed the protection of Judah. You looked in that day to the armor of the House of the Forest;
You also saw the damage to the city of David, That it was great; And you gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
You numbered the houses of Jerusalem, And the houses you broke down To fortify the wall.
You also made a reservoir between the two walls For the water of the old pool. But you did not look to its Maker, Nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago.
And in that day the Lord GOD of hosts Called for weeping and for mourning, For baldness and for girding with sackcloth.
But instead, joy and gladness, Slaying oxen and killing sheep, Eating meat and drinking wine: «Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!»
Then it was revealed in my hearing by the LORD of hosts, «Surely for this iniquity there will be no atonement for you, Even to your death,» says the Lord GOD of hosts.
Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: «Go, proceed to this steward, To Shebna, who is over the house, and say:
«What have you here, and whom have you here, That you have hewn a sepulcher here, As he who hews himself a sepulcher on high, Who carves a tomb for himself in a rock?
Indeed, the LORD will throw you away violently, O mighty man, And will surely seize you.
He will surely turn violently and toss you like a ball Into a large country; There you shall die, and there your glorious chariots Shall be the shame of your masteŕs house.
So I will drive you out of your office, And from your position he will pull you down.
«Then it shall be in that day, That I will call My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah;
I will clothe him with your robe And strengthen him with your belt; I will commit your responsibility into his hand. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem And to the house of Judah.
The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; So he shall open, and no one shall shut; And he shall shut, and no one shall open.
I will fasten him as a peg in a secure place, And he will become a glorious throne to his fatheŕs house.
«They will hang on him all the glory of his fatheŕs house, the offspring and the posterity, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the pitchers.
In that day,́ says the LORD of hosts, «the peg that is fastened in the secure place will be removed and be cut down and fall, and the burden that was on it will be cut off; for the LORD has spoken.»́
