Scholarios, George (Gennadios) (ca. 1403–1472)
A. EDWARD SIECIENSKI
George Scholarios was a great admirer of Thomas Aquinas and an advocate of union with Rome at the Council of Florence (1438–9). However, following the death of his friend and teacher Mark of Ephesus in 1445, Scholarios became a staunch anti-unionist and then first patriarch of Constantinople (as Gennadios II) following the fall of the city in 1453.
