St. Mark of Ephesus (1392–1445)

A. EDWARD SIECIENSKI

Mark Eugenicus was metropolitan of Ephesus and leader of the anti-unionist party during and after the Council of Florence (1438–9). He claimed that the Western teachings on purgatory and the filioque were heretical, and were supported by the Latins only on the basis of corrupted and spurious texts. He alone among the Greek delegates refused to sign the Tomos of union, returning east to lead the campaign against it until his death in 1445.
