Evlogitaria

DIMITRI CONOMOS

Troparia sung on Sundays and Great Feasts, following the reading from the Psalter. The word evlogitarion comes from the Greek word for “blessed” and is so named for the refrain “Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes” (Ps. 118.12 LXX) which punctuates these hymns devoted to the resurrection of Christ. (For Saturdays commemorating the dead and for funerals there is a second series of evlogitaria.) The evlogitaria are exclamations of joy in the risen Christ.
