RUNCIMAN, STEVEN, Byzantinist, diplomat, educator (7 July 1903– ). He was a King’s Scholar at Eton and a scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned an M.A. From 1927 to 1938 he was a fellow of Trinity College and a lecturer from 1932 to 1938. From 1942 to 1945 he was professor of Byzantine art and history at the University of Istanbul. His many publications include The Great Church in Captivity (1968) and Byzantine Style and Civilization (1975). He was knighted in 1958.
