ATHANASIUS OF ATHOS
ATHANASIUS OF ATHOS, monk, St. (ca. 920–1003). A monk of Bithynia who moved to Mt. Athos (q.v.) and established its first monastery, the Lavra (961). Supported by the emperors, he was made head of all the communities there, which numbered fifty-eight by the time of his death.
