NISSIOTIS, NIKOS

NISSIOTIS, NIKOS, Greek Orthodox lay theologian, teacher, ecumenist (21 May 1925–17 August 1986). After pursuing theological studies in Greece and studying under Karl Barth in Basel and Emil Brunner in Zurich, he received a doctoral degree from Louvain University and joined the theological faculty of Athens University. Following World War II he was general secretary of the Student Christian Movement in Greece and a member of the World Student Christian Federation. From 1958 he served on the staff of the Ecumenical Institute, Bossey, Switzerland, and was its director from 1966 to 1974. From 1975 to 1983 he was a member of the World Council of Churches Central Committee and a moderator of the Commission on Faith and Order from 1976 to 1983.
