KANTAKOUZENOS

KANTAKOUZENOS. The name of a prominent aristocratic family of late Byzantium (q.v.) who produced one emperor, Joh n VI Kantakouzenos (1347–1354), the supporter of Gregory Palamas (q.v.). The family would later produce several prominent figures among the Phanariots during the later Ottoman Empire (qq.v.).
