HUSSEY, JOAN M., Byzantinist, educator (1908– ). After receiving a Ph.D. from St. Hugh’s College, Oxford, she was Pfeiffer Research Fellow at Girton (1934–37), lecturer in history at the University of Manchester (1937–43), and lecturer and then reader in history at Bedford College in the University of London (1943–50). From 1950 to 1974 she was professor of history at Royal Holloway College in the University of London, now emeritus. She is the author of The Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire (rev. ed. 1990); and there is a Festschrift in her honor, Kathegetria: Essays to Joan Hussey for Her 80th Birthday (1988).
