HOPKO, THOMAS J

HOPKO, THOMAS J., priest, theologian (28 March 1939– ). Born in New York, he received degrees from Fordham University (1960) and St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (q.v.) (1963) before marriage and ordination to the priesthood. Over the next twenty years he pastored several parishes while teaching advanced courses and receiving degrees from Duquesne University (M.A., 1968) and Fordham (Ph.D., 1982). He began lecturing in dogmatic theology full time at St. Vladimir’s in 1983 and became dean in 1992. He has represented the Orthodox Church in America at the World Council of Churches Assemblies and on the Faith and Order Commission. In addition to occasional articles and essays, he has published numerous books, including a catechism, The Orthodox Faith (1972–76), in four parts, and Women and the Priesthood (1983).
