HARAKAS, STANLEY S

HARAKAS, STANLEY S., priest, theologian, educator (13 January 1932– ). After receiving his diploma in theology from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Theological School (q.v.), Brookline, Massachusetts, (1954), he was ordained priest (1956) and further received a B.A. (1957) and a B.D (1959). In 1965 he received a Th.D. from Boston University and was instructor at Holy Cross from 1966 to 1967, assistant professor, 1967–71, associate professor, 1971–72, and professor from 1972 to the present. Dean of the School of Theology, 1970–80, and dean of the affiliated Hellenic College, 1971–75, in 1986 he received the Archbishop Iakovos Chair of Orthodox Theology. Since 1961 he has been very active in ecumenical (q.v.) dialog. He has occasionally authored works under the pseudonym “Exe-tastes,” and is the author of Let Mercy Abound: A Chronicle of Greek Orthodox Social Concerns (1983) and Toward Transfigured Life: The Theoria of Eastern Orthodox Ethics (1983) among other works.
