GRABAR, ANDRE

GRABAR, ANDRE, art historian, archaeologist (26 July 1896–5 October 1990). He studied at the universities of Kiev and Petrograd under Professors N. P. Kondakov and D. V. Ainalov. Settling in Strasbourg in 1922, he studied under Professors Paul Perdrizet and Gabriel Millet. Professor of the history of art at Strasbourg University, 1928–37, he moved permanently to Paris to succeed Professor Millet as the director of studies (Christian and Byzantine Archaeology) at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, 1937–66, and was professor of early Christian and Byzantine archaeology at the College de France, 1946–66. In 1955 he became a member of the French Academy. He is the author of Christian Iconography: A Study of Its Origins (trans. 1968) and numerous other works. He was awarded the title of doctor honoris causa of the Universities of Princeton, Uppsala, and Edinburgh.
