EVDOKIMOV, PAUL N., Russian lay theologian (2 August 1901–16 September 1970). In 1907 his father, a military colonel of an aristocratic family, was assassinated. In 1917 the family moved to Kiev where Paul attended the Theological Academy, but his training was cut short when he was called into the army. In 1920 the family moved to Odessa, then went into exile at Constantinople, and from there to Paris in 1923. In 1923 he received a master’s degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne, a master’s degree in theology from the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute (q.v.) in 1928, and a doctorate in philosophy from the Faculty of Letters of Aix-en-Provence in 1942 for a thesis on Dostoevsky (q.v.). From 1953 on he was professor of moral theology at St. Sergius. Always interested in ecumenism (q.v.), from 1967 he taught at the ecumenical school of the Catholic Institute, Paris. The main trend of his theological thought is pneumatological, and his works are primarily available in French. He is the author of a pair of books on the subject of marriage and human sexuality, The Sacrament of Love (trans. 1985) and Woman and the Salvation of the World (trans. 1994).
