EPANAGOGE
EPANAGOGE. The term means “return,” more properly an eisagoge (introduction), thus the publication in 886 using this title by the Emperors Basil I and Leo VI, with the assistance of the Patriarch Photius (q.v.). The Epanagoge in Forty Titles was intended to serve as an introduction and guide to the whole of imperial legislation, including both civil and ecclesiastical law. It was and remains one of the most important sources for Orthodox Canon Law (q.v.).
