CZERNAGORA

CZERNAGORA. The Slavic place-name translated as “Montenegro” (black mountain) designates a small republic of the former Yugoslavia located south of Bosnia and west of Serbia (qq.v.). Its population is overwhelmingly Serbian-speaking and, at least by cultural designation, Orthodox. The region, exceptionally rugged and mountainous, does have the distinction of never having been conquered by the Ottoman Empire (q.v.). For centuries the resistance was led by a succession of prince-bishops, a development unique in Orthodox history.
