ALIVISATOS, HAMILKAR S

ALIVISATOS, HAMILKAR S. (17 May 1887–14 August 1969). A Greek Orthodox lay theologian who obtained his doctorate in Athens (1908) for his thesis on Joh n Chrysostom (q.v.), then studied church history at Berlin and Leipzig. He became professor of Canon Law and pastoral theology at Athens in 1918. In 1927 he took part in the Universal Christian Conference on Life and Work, Stockholm, and again at the World Conference on Faith and Order, Lausanne, 1927. In 1936 he organized and presided over the first International Congress of Orthodox Theology at Athens. He was a member of the World Council of Churches’ Central Committee from 1948 to 1969, and served on the Faith and Order Commission and the Committee on Intercommunion. He was always a vocal proponent of Orthodox involvement in the ecumenical movement (q.v.). He was also actively involved in the Greek Ministry of Education and was a state representative to the Holy Synod.
