CALIVAS, ALKIVIADIS

CALIVAS, ALKIVIADIS, priest, theologian (1932– ). Born in northern Epirus, Calivas grew up in New York City and completed his studies at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (q.v.), earning a B.A. (1956). He received his S.T.B. (1960) from General Theological Seminary, New York, the Th.M. (1970) from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (q.v.), and the Th.D. (1982) in Liturgics from the University of Thessaloniki School of Theology. In 1956 he was ordained a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese (q.v.).

Fr. Calivas is professor of liturgics at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He has been teaching at Holy Cross since 1978, and was dean from 1980 to 1993. Active in ecumenical, interfaith, and pan-Orthodox consultations and conferences, he has served on several Archdiocesan commissions and boards, and as president of the National Council of Presbyters. He has written several articles and books, including The Divine Liturgy: The Time of Its Celebration, Come Before God, and more recently, Great Week and Pascha in the Greek Orthodox Church.
